Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa should serve as an inspiration for the faithful to follow her example of love and service, the rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception said last week. "Our celebration today is meant to focus on the virtues which Mother practiced in her life, and to encourage us to imitate in our own lives those same qualities," Msgr. Walter R. Rossi, the National Shrine's rector, said during an Aug. 26 Mass marking Blessed Teresa's 100th birthday. "Mother summoned us to examine our lives in light of Gospel values, and today she calls us to do the same as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of her birth."

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has marked mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa with a number of events, including hosting the Sept. 5 unveiling of a commemorative stamp in honor of the nun. On that day, the 13th anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States, will be the principal celebrant and homilist of a 2 p.m. Memorial Mass in the Upper Church. The Mass will precede the U.S. Postal Service's unveiling of its commemorative stamp of Mother Teresa in honor of the centennial of her birth.
